Know your rights

Your council may have a duty to help

Under the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017, councils in England must give free advice on preventing homelessness. If you are homeless or likely to become homeless within 56 days, your council may have a legal duty to help you.

This is general information, not legal advice. For advice about your own situation, contact Shelter or your local council.

When you contact your council

  • Say clearly that you are homeless or at risk of homelessness
  • Bring any ID you have
  • Keep letters about eviction, notices or your tenancy
  • Note where you have stayed recently
  • Ask for everything they decide in writing
